Donuts Are Forever 8 @ Brooklyn Bowl – 2.16.14

“Donuts Are Forever™ (established in 2007) is Rare Form’s annual fundraiser and tribute inspired by the life and music of late producer James “J Dilla” Yancey. The name Donuts Are Forever™ (DAF) pays homage to J Dilla’s last album, Donuts, released   posthumously in February 2006, when J Dilla succumbed to complications from Lupus.”

Donuts Are Forever

Now in it’s 8th year, DAF is an NYC institution, as well as a personal tradition. Every year, we brave the cold to stand on a line that stretches down the block, all in the name of partying with a cause. DAF is always about love, friends, good music, amazing DJs and a fantastic atmosphere that I rarely see anymore. I especially look forward to reconnecting with folks who travel far and wide every year for this event, and it is always an honor to document it. All of the proceeds from this event benefit the DAF Scholarship Fund, which provides music education opportunities to participants of Groundwork for Success, a Good Shepherd Services college preparatory youth program in East New York, Brooklyn.

DAF8 was flawless… all of the DJs – DJ Tara, Good Reverend Dr. J, DJ Prince, DJ Still Life, 6th Sense, DJ Parler and headliner DJ Jazzy Jeff (!!!) – entertained the crowd with classic Dilla as well as innovative mixes that I thoroughly enjoyed, as Torae and DonWill held it down on the hosting duties… I especially loved the slide show that played during the event, recapping all of the previous DAFs. I hope this continues to be an integral part of future DAFs.

Hats off to Rare Form for the phenomenal work they’ve been doing. Enjoy the photos…til next year!
